A Catered Affair

About A Catered Affair

A CATERED AFFAIR is all of the moving, funny, difficult stuff that we survive as members of that thing we call family. Who said what to whom? Who did what to whom? Who didn't say what they should have said? It's about the loves, the hurts, the regrets and the laughs that can only be shared with the people who know us best.

A CATERED AFFAIR tells the story of a working class Bronx family in 1953 who must make a seemingly simple decision - Whether to spend their life's savings on a family business or a wedding for their only daughter. A simple decision, but is anything simple when it comes to family?

AGNES HURLEY says she didn't mind getting married in a cotton print dress at City Hall, but her daughter is going to have a white wedding with flowers and cake and a ten foot bridal train whether the girl, or anyone else, wants it or not.

TOM HURLEY has worked hard his whole life as a New York City taxicab driver. He's stayed married and faithful to one woman, raised two upstanding children, helped out his extended relations whenever they needed, and has still managed to save enough money to buy his own cab at last. But does attaining his American Dream mean denying his child a good start in life? Which is the better investment; a taxi or your child's happiness?

JANEY is their daughter who, raised in the shadow of an older brother, was never given more than life's basics. She knows her folks can't afford a fancy party so she's never allowed herself to even want one. But now, with her brother's passing in Korea, she finds the spotlight of the family focused directly, and uncomfortably, on her.

And WINSTON is the family's confirmed bachelor uncle who manages to meddle in everyone else's affairs while avoiding his own entanglements by living on the foldout couch in his sister's parlor.
